Here is a preview of what’s inside: it’s more of a journey than a set of displays. The story starts in the first gallery with 1912 “boomtown Belfast” and takes you in a caged lift to the fourth floor for an atmospheric six-minute cart ride through the shipyards. The third gallery is based around a glass apex with a film projection re-creating the completed Titanic on the slipways outside. It launches into dry dock for fit out, with depictions of the first-, second- and third-class cabins in the next gallery.

The cave section is a journey through the bowels of the ship, projected on the walls. Gallery five is based on the ship’s maiden voyage and re-creates life on board. In the next gallery, the walls narrow and the temperature drops as we trace the timeline of the sinking from iceberg collision to final gasp of air on April 15. The British and American inquiries into the disaster follow in the next gallery.

The final two galleries are just as evocative, devoted to the legends of the ship, with touchscreen displays of Titanic folklore and a voyage to the Nova Scotia seabed where the wreck now lies, using film footage of an ocean dive in 1985. An Ocean Exploration Centre, developed with marine biologists, completes a memorable visit.

In 1888, Queen Victoria gave Belfast the title of city and it was generally agreed that a new city hall was needed to reflect this change in status.

Building work Negotiations to acquire the one and a half acre White Linen Hall site, located in Donegall Square, began in 1896 and a price of £30,000 was agreed. Built by local firm H+J Martin, following a design from Alfred Brumwell Thomas, who won a public competition with his classical Renaissance design. Funding for the new building was raised from the profits of Belfast Gasworks

The first stone was laid in 1898 and building work was completed eight years later. In total, Belfast City Hall cost less than £500,000 to build. Belfast City Hall opened its doors on 1 August 1906 during a great time of prosperity for the city.

Today, the magnificent building is a lasting memorial to Belfast’s success and a great source of civic pride.

In 1865 a competition for the design of a memorial to Queen Victoria’s late Prince Consort, Prince Albert, was won by
W. J. Barre, who had earlier designed
Belfast’s Ulster Hall. Initially Barre was
not awarded his prize and the contract
was secretly given to Lanyon, Lynn,
and Lanyon, who had come second.
Following public outcry the contract
was eventually awarded to Barre. The construction cost of £2,500
(2011: £181,000) was raised by public subscription.

Being situated close to the docks, the tower was once infamous for being
frequented by prostitutes plying their trade with visiting sailors. However,
in recent years regeneration has turned the surrounding Queen’s Square and
Custom’s House Square into attractive, modern public spaces with trees,
fountains and sculptures.

The sandstone memorial was constructed between 1865 and 1869 by
Fitzpatrick Brothers builders and stands 113 feet tall in a mix of French
and Italian Gothic styles. The base of the tower features flying buttresses
with heraldic lions.
A statue of the Prince in the robes of a Knight of the Garter stands on the
western side of the tower and was sculpted by SF Lynn. A two tonne bell is
housed in the tower and the clock was made by Francis Moore of High
Street, Belfast.

As a result of being built on wooden piles on marshy, reclaimed land
around the River Farset, the top of the tower leans four feet off the
perpendicular. Due to this movement, some ornamental work on the belfry
was removed in 1924 along with a stone canopy over the statue of the Prince.

In 1947, the film Odd Man Out was filmed partly in Belfast, with the Albert
Clock as a central location, although neither the town nor the clock is explicitly identified.

Late Stone Age Megalithic Tombs

It was only around the fifth millennium B.C., with the advent of new farming stock bringing their own seeds and flocks with them, that people in Ireland began to settle down permanently in one place and discover for the first time the monumental power of stone. This new dawn they expressed in the form of megalithic tombs for the burial of the elite in Late Stone Age society who, in time, would be revered as the tribal ancestors legitimising ownership of the land. The impressive size, and seeming eternality, of the monuments they erected must have stood in awe-inspiring contrast to the simple wooden houses of the stone-builders themselves.

Dolmens

What two hundred years ago were called cromlechs (or 'curved stones') we now call dolmens, from two Breton words meaning 'stone table'. Academic musings of the eighteenth century saw them as altars for druidical sacrifice, though local folklore envisaged them more romantically as the beds of the young lovers Diarmuid and Gráinne on their flight from the wrath of an aged Fionn mac Cumhaill. We know now that dolmens are, more prosaically, burial places for the dead, Poulnabrone in the Burren producing 22 burials in a much-visited example that dates from around 3800 B.C. That at Legananny, Co. Down, looks appropriately as if three stones were carrying a coffin aloft.

Normally, a dolmen consists of between three and seven upright stones bearing a massive capstone which has sometimes fallen because of its weight, as is the case at Browneshill near Carlow, where the capstone has been calculated to weigh one hundred tonnes. One can only wonder at the engineering ingenuity of the men who erected such stones, probably with the help of a temporary earthen ramp, and without being able to call on anything like the cranes or block-and-tackle we have today. The simple macho silhouette of dolmens has led to them being described as Ireland's first pieces of public sculpture!

Court Tombs

Less dramatic, but more impressive in scale, are court cairns, large tombs consisting of a long roofed gallery of massive boulders covered with a mound of smaller stones, and opening off a semi-circular court where funerary rituals would probably have been performed. Their distribution is confined to the north and north-west of Ireland, where they had links with Scotland. Their builders (speaking a tongue, and being of a race, we cannot identify) would seem to have buried only a few, presumably special, individuals in the tombs, usually by cremation which is now again, after a lapse of thousands of years, beginning to become fashionable again.

Passage Graves

Passage graves are bestknown through their most famous example - Newgrange. They get their name because a passage leads from the rim of a round mound to its centre (or near the centre), where there is a burial chamber covered over with stones and earth. Other than the tumulus being round rather than angular, the system is similar to the pyramids of Egypt which, however, are likely to be later than most of the Irish passage graves. But the pyramids were designed as the tomb of a single individual, the deified Pharaoh, rather than for a number of (usually cremated) dead, as is the case with the Irish passage graves. Such tombs are spread along the maritime countries of Western Europe, and the idea for building them may have come northwards by sea to Ireland from Brittany, where some of the oldest known examples are found.

Newgrange itself is a masterful piece of Stone Age engineering, with the passage aligned to a point on the horizon where the sun rises on the shortest few days of the year, and shines for about 17 minutes through a narrow slit above the entrance right into the back of the burial chamber. It is the achievement of capturing the sun's rays in this way at the winter solstice that has made Newgrange famous throughout the world, but the tomb is also remarkable for the decoration of the stones, particularly that in front of the entrance, with its famous triple spiral (a motif that is also repeated on the back chamber of the tomb).

Newgrange is only one, albeit the most famous, of the approximately 300 passage graves in Ireland, which are found largely in the northern half of the country. There are two other important examples close by in the Boyne Valley, Dowth and Knowth, the latter of whichhas been extensively excavated to reveal what is perhaps the greatest collection of Stone Age 'art' anywhere in Europe. It differs from Newgrange as we know it today in having two separate burial chambers back to back, each very different in character. County Meath has another important cluster of partially-decorated passage graves forming a cemetery on the Loughcrew hills, otherwise known as Sliabh na Calliaghe.

Passage graves are usually sited on hill-tops, where they can be seen for miles around - the most notable instance being 'Queen Medhbh's grave' on the summit of Knocknarea in Sligo, a county very rich in passage graves. A number of these megaliths are grouped together at Carrowmore where excavations suggest that stone tombs may have been built there as early as the fifth millennium B.C. (that is, before 4000 B.C.).

Wedge-Shaped Tombs

Metal began to be worked in Ireland before 2000 B.C., and one type of megalithic tomb that may have been used by these early metallurgists was the wedge-shaped grave, which consists of a long stone-lined and -roofed gallery placed in a wedge-shaped mound of stones that narrows in width towards the back of the tomb. So-called Beaker pottery found in some of these tombs hints at links with copper-mining, particularly in Kerry, but other locations on upland limestone pasture, like the Burren, suggest that pastoralists, too, may have been involved in their construction. One of the finest examples is Labbacallee, Co. Cork, but they are also found in many other parts of the country.

Prehistoric Earthworks

Earthworks are monuments of various shapes and sizes made simply by piling up earth, starting in the Stone Age with the banks of rare rounded enclosures such as the imposing Giant's Ring at Ballynahatty near Belfast, which has a small megalith near its centre, or the so-called causewayed camps at the Antrim sites of Lyles Hill and Donegore. Much more common are the U-shaped 'burnt mounds' or fulachta fiadha, in which water heated with hot stones was probably used for cooking, but possibly also for personal washing - or both. Widespread, too, are round mounds, or barrows, used for burials, of which a number of examples are known on the Hill of Tara.

Tara has a rare example of a cursus, which is the ceremonial end to a road with earthen banks on either side and to which the medieval chroniclers of Tara gave the romantic name of 'The Banqueting Hall'. The hill-top itself is within the so-called 'Royal Enclosure' consisting of an incomplete oval ditch inside a bank, which suggests more a ritual than a defensive purpose. Not far away is Rath Medhbh, a roughly circular enclosure, but more war-like because the ditch is outside the bank. This is the more usual configuration in the hill-forts found around Ireland, as at Mooghaun, Co. Clare, which - at over 27 acres - is probably the largest in the country. These earthen forts may date from the Late Bronze Age, around 700 B.C., or from the Iron Age which followed it.

Tara is only one of a number of important royal sites in Ireland that have mythological links with echoes going back to before the dawn of the country's history. One of these is Emhain Macha, Navan Fort, where a remarkable wooden structure 40m across, and consisting of half a dozen concentric circles of posts with a taller one at the centre, was built around 100 B.C. - only to be ritually set on fire some decades later. Of roughly the same date are long earthworks snaking across the borders of South Ulster, and known variously as the Dorsey, the Dane's Cast, or the Black Pig's Dyke. They may possibly have been erected to protect the province against invasion from the south - epitomised by the army of Queen Medhbh, whose royal seat was at Rathcroghan on the plains of Roscommon, where there is a large mound which is said to mark the area where she had her 'palace'. Another important royal site was Knockaulin or Dún Ailinne in Kildare (not regularly accessible), where excavations suggested the former presence there of a kind of wooden amphitheatre within a large, circular earthen hill-top fort.

Phil Lynott (1949-1986) was known as the frontman, singer, bassist, and songwriter for the Irish Rock band, "Thin Lizzy" in addition to solo efforts.

The statue was sculpted by Paul Daly and is located in front of a club called Bruxelles.

Dublin City plans to make 450 bicycles publicly available from 40 locations around the city in a scheme similar to that which exists in Paris and done in conjunction with the same private partner.
In what is clearly a nice idea, people will be able to pick up a bike whenever they need it and drop it back to any of the locations when they are done. A Smart-card system will handle issues like deposits and payment. Any fee will be very modest – the plan is to make them as freely available as possible.
The network will be monitored and distribution teams will maintain and move bikes around the city depending on demand and supply.
The network of stations will extend from the Mater Hospital in the north to Grand Canal in the south and from Smithfield in the west to the IFSC and North Docklands in the east.

Dublin will join other European cities such as Paris (Velib), Lyon (Velo’v Lyon), Vienna (Citybike Wien) and Seville (Sevici) in possessing a city centre network of automated bike stations.

What is a leprechaun?
The leprechaun is a character of Irish Mythology. He is about 2'6" (75cm) tall. He is very rich but extremely tricky and if you catch one don't take your eyes off him, or he will disappear! He is a very slick talker and loves a bit of fun.

Where does he live?
He lives in a secluded spot, usually a small hole in the ground, where he has a comfortable little home.

Where did the leprechaun come from?
Leprechauns came from a mythical land under the sea and when they arrived in Ireland decided to make their home here. The first recorded sighting of a leprechaun dates to the 8th century.

Are there any female leprechauns?
There are references to female leprechauns, but they are even harder to catch than the males.

What clothes does he wear?
Leprechauns like old style clothes and they have magic red hats which allow them to disappear and sometimes to travel great distances in the blink of an eye.

What does he do?
by trade the leprechaun is a shoemaker, and he provides the fairies with their dancing shoes. As the fairies love to dance, he is always busy.

How does he have so much gold?
He is well paid by the fairies and keeps nearly all the money he earns in a crock.

Where does he keep his gold?
He buries his gold in the ground in a secluded spot and if you catch him he is obliged to tell you where. If you follow a rainbow to the end you will find his treasure.

How do you catch a leprechaun?
The best time to see a leprechaun is early morning or at dusk. You can sometimes hear him tapping with his hammer. If you are lucky he will be so busy making his shoes that he will not hear you. When you catch him, keep a close eye on him - he is a very slippery customer!

Small and wizened but not always old, he usually appears alone, sometimes sitting on a toad-stool smoking his pipe and hammering a shoe. You can hear this hammering for some distance in the woodland.
Despite having short, thin legs, he is very agile, and moves very quickly through fields and woods; he climbs trees very well, and is a great swimmer. A slick speaker, and a great musician, you might see him resting or playing music on a toad-stool, rock, or on the branch of a tree. The best time to spot a Leprechaun is at daybreak or sunset.
Leprechauns live in a secluded spots – usually a hole in the ground covered by foliage, in which he has built a comfortable little home. His mother cooks for him and he especially fond of his ‘potatoes’ (i.e. pig-nuts). Fairies (in Irish, sí) are a spirit community, who inhabit the landscape side by side with humans. The word in modern Irish sí comes from the Old Irish sídh, which represents in fact two different words – one meaning a ‘tumulus’ and the other meaning ‘quiet’ or ‘peace’. From this, it is clear that this otherworld community were thought of in antiquity as inhabiting a quiet and secluded realm. Originally they seem to have been a fusion of different things – such as mythological personages, the cult of the dead, and legends explaining mysterious phenomena and extraordinary happenings.
The sí-people of folklore are usually of normal human height, but sometimes they are thought of as being somewhat smaller. They have magical power, and it is dangerous to mention their name (sí, or fairy), and so people used circumlocutions for them – such as na daoine maithe (‘the good people’), na daoine uaisle (‘the noble people’), na daoine beaga (‘the little people’), bunadh na gcnoc (‘the race of the hills’). They engage in the same types of activity as humans, but in their own unseen realm – work on their farms or in their houses, music, singing, courtship, sports, etc.
Different groups of fairies inhabit different localities, and they have kings and queens to rule over them. Groups of fairies can be hostile to each other, and sometimes noises at night are heard by people as two fairy armies clash. In the morning white liquid on the ground is understood to be fairy blood spillt in a battle. It is dangerous for a human to be out late at night when fairy armies are abroad. These are called an slua sí, known in English as a ‘fairy cavalcade’ or ‘the trooping fairies’ i.e. a group of fairies in war-like and hostile mood.
The main dwelling of a fairy group is in a large old earthenwork fort or ‘rath’. Inside such forts are the ‘palaces’ of the fairies, which serve as assembly-halls for them as well as the scenes of great feasts. In these forts throughout the countryside, music and entertainment can be heard at night by passers-by. Sometimes the fairies can be seen to dance on top of old moats, or to play hurling in a field beside a fort. 1. The first show was held in 1864 under the auspices of the Society, but organised by the Royal Agricultural Society of Ireland. There were 366 entries in the first show with a total prize fund of £520.

2. On the 28, 29 and 30 July 1868 the first show was held and organised by the Royal Dublin Society on the lawns of Leinster House. The Council granted £100 out of the Society's funds to be awarded in prizes. It started as a show of led-horses and featured ‘leaping' demonstrations.

Archaeologists excavating a site at Hammond Lane, Church Street on Dublin’s north side have discovered the remains of a classic Viking House. The house is the first complete plan of this type of house to have been discovered on the north side of the River Liffey and dates to the late Viking Age, immediately prior to the Anglo Norman invasion.

The house is of a type well known from excavations at Wood Quay. The house is set within a regular plot that fronted onto Church Street. These dwellings are rectangular in plan and substantial in size measuring approximately 40m2 with post and wattle side walls covered in mud for insulation. The roofs are thought to have been straw thatch and/or sod supported by four large posts around a central hearth. The houses were divided into small rooms or compartments and was described by Maragert Gowen as the Viking Age equivalent to a ‘3 bed semi-D’.

The house lay in the suburb of Oxmanstown which was served by nearby St Michan’s parish church (founded 1095) and was linked to the walled settlement on the south side of the river by the ford known as Áth Cliath and later by a bridge that aligned with Church Street. KNOWTH Located at the western end of Bru Na Boinne. The great mound of this spectacular site is outlined by 127 massive kerbstones. Knowth is truely extensive with at least 18 (eighteen) smaller or satelight tombs located around the large buriel mound, at least two of these were constructed before the great mound itself. In 1967 / 1968, Professor George Eogan and his team of archaeologists discovered two tombs, with the large central mound, one of the spectacular features at Knowth is the wealth of decoration on the structural stones.
